Virgil Marti, a Philadelphia-based artist whose sculptures straddle the divide between art and design, creating “everyday” objects such as wallpaper, chandeliers, and beaded curtains that pair decadent aesthetics with mass culture and the 1970s suburban lifestyle of of his youth. Virgil as been involved with such prestigious institutions as the Whitney Museum of Art (2004 Biennial) and The Fabric Workshop and Museum, he is currently exhibiting some of his work in “Directions” with Pae White at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture garden in Washington DC

Hills Like White Elephants by Ernest Hemingway allotment 2

August 25th, 2010 by beadcurtain No comments »

Hills Like White Elephants by Ernest Hemingway part 2You started it, the girl said. I was being amused. I was having a fine time. Well, lets try and have a fine time. All right. I was trying. I said the mountains looked like white elephants. Wasnt that bright? That was bright. I wanted to try this new drink. Thats all we do, isnt it look at things and try new drinks? I guess so. The girl looked across at the hills. Theyre lovely hills, she said. They dont really look like white elephants. I just meant the colouring of their skin through the trees. Should we have another drink? All right. The warm wind blew the bead curtain against the table. The beers nice and cool, the man said. Its lovely, the girl said. Its really an awfully simple operation, Jig, the man said. Its not really an operation at all. The girl looked at the ground the table legs rested on. I know you wouldnt mind it, Jig. Its really not anything. Its just to let the air in. The girl did not say anything. Ill go with you and Ill stay with you all the time. They just let the air in and then its all perfectly natural. Then what will we do afterwards? Well be fine afterwards. Just like we were before. What makes you think so? Thats the only thing that bothers us. Its the only thing thats made us unhappy. www.gummyprint.com

Transfixed Constellation~ Chapter 2

Sylvia’s first class is with Mr. Mourson, the history teacher. She’s determined to make a good first impression, but that attempt seems to fail as soon as she scans his appearance. Mr. Mourson is rather tall, wide, and wears his menacing expression well. Those dark, cold, black beaded eyes seem to bore into everything that comes within contact, and his long disheveled hair that curtains the sides of his face make him look absolutely mad. Sunken, dark bags puff under the black eyes, looking as if he hadn’t slept in months, or they were deliberately made to look in that manner. As he assigns seats, Sylvia can’t help, but notice his twitchy walk, making him look as though he were anticipating something, and ready to strike within a second’s notice. “Sylvia Prince,” he calls lazily, moving on to the next name and only briefly pointing to her seat. He doesn’t look like he’s going to repeat anything for anyone, so she’s glad she snapped back into reality when she did. When everyone was seated Mr. Mourson turned to face the class, beginning the usual first class of the year speech, but with a more threatening tone, “There will be no mockery, or humour in this classroom. You do not speak unless you are called on, and you only address me as “professor”, or “sir”. Are we understood? I will not repeat myself, and you are expected to prepare for each class, because there will be an oral quiz after each assigned section or reading.” No one speaks, but just nod in agreement, too

Butterfly Curtains For Your Child

August 20th, 2010 by beadcurtain No comments »

When it comes to decorative butterflies, there is an almost uncountable number of ways to bring them into our homes and families. You can hang them from the ceiling in your favorite room. You can stake some in the garden.

But one of the real joys of the butterfly obsession is when someone you love expresses an interesting in sharing it with you. Like, for example, when your daughter comes and asks if you will help her pick some butterfly curtains for her bedroom.

It will be like you have been magically transported to Heaven!

And butterfly curtains are one of the niftier ways to endure that butterfly decorations are given their appropriate due in the house. Remember, our attraction to butterflies is rooted in two things. Our sense of these beautiful winged critters as being both lovely and fragile, and our feeling that in their powers of flight they are somehow magical.

Curtains that are adorned with butterfly prints aptly capture these two elements. You will have these pictures of colorful bright butterflies and when sunlight filters through, they will appear to glow, achieving an almost ethereal quality.

And when a soft breeze passes through, these butterflies will appear to be dancing, just fluttering on the light as if they are actually filling up the room. Your daughter might suddenly believe she is being visited by fairies!

But for all that, you need to remember that before they are aesthetically pleasing, curtains must be functional. And if they fail to meet certain practical standards then it doesn’t matter how perfectly they are decorated.

Are the curtains made of a material (and a sufficiency of it) that when they are drawn tight they will keep most of the light out of the room? Pulling the curtains close can be a real aid in letting a child sleep beyond dawn. This can be important when she isn’t feeling well or when the following day is important and busy and she needs her rest.

Curtains are important in terms of privacy, too. Can be they be drawn easily by tiny hands? Are they too flimsy so that you can see through them?

In other words, don’t let your attraction to butterflies cloud your judgment about what the curtains are really for!

But after you are certain that your priorities are in place, then by all means go shopping! And yes – bring your daughter with you. It’s important to give children a say what their room looks like. She can keep you posted on what looks good, and you can be keeping an eye on functionality.

Remember that curtains come in a broad array of prices. The less you spend, the less you get. You don’t have to go all the way high end, but don’t be afraid to spend a little to keep the curtains top notch.

Butterfly curtains will make your child’s bedroom feel magical and beautiful. Be grateful that you have someone who wants to share this fun obsession with you! And be sure that you keep a firm hand on the selection process.
